Mind Coring – A Coaching Tool

I remember having a gut wrenching feeling just after the interview. I stared at the computer monitor intently for a few minutes, and in that moment I felt like throwing up. “What was that all about?” I asked myself. Soon afterwards all the thoughts of regret, pain, shame and disappointment began to flow. First of all, I certainly did not give a good account of myself, but what made it even worse was that I knew I had just blown up an opportunity I had been waiting on for over 6 months. What a day!

Just as I began to entertain those thoughts of self doubt telling me that I am not good enough, I don’t measure up in a group of my peers, I didn’t have what it takes to make the most a unique opportunity, and how I wilted under pressure, the fighter in me began to resist. That interview would not define me, I am still the same person with a curious mind that is prone to learning, “this is just another bump in life, but I don’t have to stay down; I must pick myself up and keep moving. There’s still a lot of challenges out there for me, and I can rise above and accomplish great things.

Every now and then life throws a beat down on us, but we have to always remember that what defines us is not the challenges we face in life, but how we respond to those challenges. In order to recover from the pain and disappointment of miserably failing at what I considered as a straightforward go-get-that-job interview, I had to dive deep into my core to remind myself of who I am. Knowing who I am was truly the saving grace because it is so easy to believe anything when you are vulnerable and disappointed in yourself. I suddenly began to feel the pain of the many people out there who do not have the benefit of the years of self-reflection, self-awareness and self-recognition that were like an anchor in my core to draw hope from in times of despair. “I know who I am, I know who I believe in, I know what I believe in, I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses.” And I know that everything being considered, I still have what it takes to accomplish great things in life.

‘Mind Coring’, yes, ‘Mind Coring’; this is the phrase I have coined to use in describing the process I went through from a deep state of disappointment and despair, to a well refuelled and hopeful person with all the confidence and determination to keep pushing towards my goals and ambitions.  Before becoming a Leadership Coach, I worked as a Research Specialist in a role where I had to identify and properly document unfamiliar and unknown details about creative processes. What I went through was a creative process that can be replicated to help move a person from a state of despair to a place of renewed confidence and determination. Once you experience this process, you can always apply it anytime you need to get out of a downer.

All other forms of encouragement are targeted at  momentarily restoring or increasing self confidence and hope, but the encouragement that comes from within is the perfect recipe for consistently rising above disappointing and challenging situations in life. This is what mind coring is all about; taking you to a place where you become an expert in self-encouragement. If you have situations or circumstances that tend to create self doubt or reduced confidence in your abilities, it is time to get it off of your path and make your journey to greatness a lot clearer.
